As Donovon approached Pewter City with his pokemon all following closely behind him, he could feel himself shaking with anticipation. Donovon walked quickly and with purpose passing trainers and civilians as if they were nothing more than signs or telephone poles. Donovons Trapinch tries its bets to walk at his trainers side. After about 15 minutes of walking through the city he found what he had came here for in the first place. There stood the Pewter City Gym and with absolutely no hesitation he barged into the Gym.

When Donovon forced open the doors to the Gym his pokemon rushed in front of him the three of them let out a large unified battle cry. Then Donovon himself shouted," Brock of the Pewter City Gym I challenge you!".

Brock gazed outside of one of his Gym's many windows. It was a nice day today. The sun was vivid and reflected through his window quite well, illuminating his massive gym battle grounds. He was proud of what he had, he admitted this. He had worked hard for this position, and he served it well.
Glancing once more outside of his window, he noticed a black haired boy walking through the city. He was easily noticable due to the fact he was heading straight for the gym, ignoring everyone else and everything else. His Trapnich hopped beside him. So, a challanger?
Brock headed towards the front of his gym doors, waiting for thsi tough guy. And without a doubt the young challanger barged in, his three Pokemon yelling out. Brock almost laughed to himself as they did this, the boy calling out his challange. He wondered if this kid was all talk or all gmae. He supposed he would find out.
"Welcome to the Pewter City Gym," he said boldly, "I'm Brock, Gym Leader. And as you've challanged me, I'll accept. We will have two rounds, so go ahead and choose your two Pokemon."
He waited for this kid to chose his Pokemon. He already had his two in mind. He reached down to his waist and grabbed a ball from his belt.

Donovon looked Brock dead in the eye and called forth Machop. Machop quickly ran onto the battle field and took a battle stance. In silence the two waited for Brock to send out his pokemon. While Donovons other two pokemon just sat back and watched.

Brock could see the way thsi kid looked at him. He had guts. Brock couldn't wait to crush his hopes and dreams.
"Alright! He said, "I think I'll use..," he picked the Pokeball farthest back on his belt, and pressed the small cylindrical button, calling out a round rock like Pokemon with arms and legs. "Graveler." Brock smirked. Let's see how he takes this. "I'll let you make the first move," he offered, standing ready for the boys next move.

When Donovon saw the Graveler appear before he knew exactly what he wanted to do. Then when brock offered the first attack he couldn't help but to flash his evil grin. He immediately called out to Machop. He said," Machop, Low Kick now". The tiny fighter rushed of to comply with Donovons command. Machop did what seemed like a baseball slide as he headed towards the large Rock-type pokemon.

Brock laughed to himself. This guy was trying to be tough. Watching as the Machop slid towards his Graveler in an attempt for a Low Kick, Brock commanded his pokemon to use Defence Curl. Graveler balled up quickly as Machop's Low Kick struck, useless against the Rock Pokemon's now protected outer shell.
"Child's play," Brock stated trying to be cool. "You've got anything better?"

Donovons grin turned into a scowl as he then instructed Machop to ready for the next attack. Donovon said still calm," Machop use Fire Punch, not on the Graveler but the ground around it and don't stop until I say so. Right command Machop began to pummel the earth that lay around the feet of the Graveler with fiery fist as Machop continued the ground started to turn from the regular brown to a bright orange color.

Brock watched as the Machop began furiously pounding the ground. What was he doing? Had his trainer gone crazy? He definantly didn't look too happy, that was for sure.
But as Brock watched flames began to appear where the Machop was stricking. Before he knew it, flames completely sorrounded his Graveler! He thought quickly of what to do, but his Pokemon was already sorrounded in flames, too large and heavy to have had run from the flames. He hated to admit it but he was in a bad position, this kid had backed him into a corner. He was showing Brock up.
"Graveler, SelfDestruct, Now!" Brock cried, and braced himself for the explosion that was sure to hit Machop but however hurt his Graveler also, unless this trainer had something up else his sleeve.

Once Donovon heard Brock order Graveler to use Selfdestruct his eyes began to widen. Donovon knew he only had a few seconds to react. So as fast as he could he shouted," Macop use a full power Karate Chop now and aim straight between the eyes!". Machop placed his left hand on the face of Graveler while with his right hand held high ready to chop his opponent in half. Donovon now back to calm quietly says, " Now". Surw enough Machop starts to bring down his right hand as fast as he can.

Brock held still, waiting for the explosion sure to come. But just then he saw the trainer shout out a command, and saw the Machop strike down swiftly on his Graveler, Karate Chopping him right between the eyes. It was a swift move, and a clever one. Brock saw his Graveler become momentarily stunned, but even he knew it was already too late. Once Graveler had begun the effects of his attack, there was no stopping it. In an instant, Graveler glowed a vivid white, and then an explosion occured on the battle field. As the smoke cleared Brock looked around or his Pokemon. Graveler lied where he had been, however the force of the Karate Chop and the Explosion, as well as the fire, had been to much for him. He looked around for the Machop. He had been blown a bit off, but he was still up, albeit quite damaged from the attack. He looked very weak, and Brock pointed this out, withdrawing his fainted pokemon. "It was a double sided move," he said, "your Machop looks too weak to continue. I'd withdraw him if you don't want him to get hurt anymore." And with that said he grabbed his next Pokeball, but waited for the Trainer's decision to withdraw his Machop or not.

Donovon saw that Machop couldn't take much more damage as reached for his pokeball to return him Machop let out an angry shout an shook its head no. He began to return its battle stance. As Machop looked Brock directly into his narrow eyes. But Donovon ignored Machops request and returned him anyways knowing he had battled enough for now. Donovon then called forth his partner Trapinch. Trapinch had been waiting for this battle and hopped onto the battlefield eagerly. Donovon apologized to Machop and now focused only on Trapinch and finishing off Brock.

Brock watched as the Machop refused to return to it's ball. It was a strong Pokemon. It had been trained right. However the Trainer still returned him to his ball. Brock respected him for this decision, for a moment he was afraid he was going to give to his Machop's wishes.
The trainer released his Trapinch, a Ground Type. Brock wondered what Pokemon to use next...He could use his Onix, but that Pokemon towered over the smaller Trapinch. That would be an unfair fight. So, he figured he'd fight a Ground with a Ground, an eye for an eye.
"Cubone! Let's battle!" he cried out, releasing the small Pokemon with a skull for a helmet. "Let's finish this, eh?" he gestured towards the trainer, a smirk on his face.

No uncertainty in his heart or mind Donovon new that this battle would lead to his first badge. When he saw that Brock had chosen to send out Cubone Donovon immediately ordered Trapinch to use Secret Power. Trapinch began to glow white lightly and charge at Cubone without any warning.

The trainer didn't hesitate to strike Cubone down, he was in this to win it, and quickly. But Brock had had much training fighting Trainers who thought they could breeze by and win their first badge, then shamble out. No, he was here to prove that a real gym battle was never easy.
"Cubone, hit him head on! Use Headbutt! Show him how thick that that skull on your head is!" he yelled encouraging his Pokemon.
Cubone charged towards the Trapinch, head held low, and a loud 'crack!' was heard as they hit each other head on. Each was knocked back, neither one seriously injured.
"Good, Cubone, now use Bone Club!" Brock shouted, and his Pokemon began to bring his Bone Club down.

Donovon didn't panic when he saw the Bone Club come closer and closer to Trapinch. Donovon calmly told Trapinch to us Protect. Quickly a bubble of pale green energy surrounded Trapinch and attempted to defend the oncoming attack. Donovn then said," Trapinch use Sand Tomb when Cubone gets close enough". Trapinch nodded to show that he understood the task he laid before him.

Brock watched as his Cubone attacked, however, the blow was deflected as the Trapinch used Protect. Clever, Brock thought. No worries, though, soon his defences would be down and...Brock watched in shock as his Cubone became covered in sand. He was trapped! Not once did Brock see a hint of hesitation in the boy, so he was suprised at his quick actions. So, this was going to be tough after all.
"Focus Energy!" Brock cried out, "As soon as your out of there we're gonna take him out!" Brock was ready, as soon as his Pokemon had gathered enough energy he would burst free from the Sand Tomb and strike the Trapinch hard.
That is, unless the boy thought quick again.

Donovon quickly called back Trapinch. In almost an instant he sent out Machop. He then said," Machop use Fire Punch quickly on the sand". Machop began to punch the sand rapid succession with his fist a flame turning the sand into glass. Machop then readied for its next command to be given still exhausted from his battle with Graveler.

Brock watched as the trainer withdrew his Trapinch. What was he thinking? Seconds later Machop was back out, and Brock laughed. What was this kid thinking? He was just full of surprises.
The Machop ran forward and began pounding at the sand that covered his Cubone. More useless attacks. But soon Brock saw the fire that powered his punches once more, and watched in shock and horror as the sand that covered Cubone turned into Glass from the heat! His Cubone was trapped inside, still powering up!
Brock acted fast. "NOW! Cubone, Release your energy with a Bone Club and shatter that glass!"
His hopes were the glass would brake and he'd have a chance to counter. But he knew his Cubone was now vulnerable. Cubone released his energy in his attack and Brock watched as the glass began to crack...

Donovon immediately ordered Machop finish of Cubone with a Cross Chop. Machops two hands began to glow bright white as he crossed them in front of his body. Machop began to charge towards Cubone and aimed directly for the throat of the ground pokemon. Donovon now had his evil grin on his face, his eyes wide and fist clenched.

Brock knew it was over the Moment Cubone broke the glass. The split second before his Pokemon could react Machop hit him with a Cross Chop. Cubone took it straight to the throat, and struck numb, was unable to continue. Brock returned his defeated Pokemon to its ball.

He had seen the look in the boy's eye, seen his face. And though he had been an quick and agile competitor, Brock was still worried about this victory. The boy had been quiet, strong willed, and a quick fighter. But the look he had just given...he had seen that face on many a villain, notably those of Team Rocket.

Brock walked over to the boy and congratulated him. "You did well. You reacted to everything I threw at you. You will make a great trainer." He hesitated a moment, unsure what to say. "But...you...you should, you should laugh more!" He said with a grin. "You're too quiet, and it comes off as cold. I can tell you have a good heart, but your demeanor shows otherwise." He placed one hand on the boy's shoulder. "You treat your Pokemon with respect. They obviously do the same. Keep that up, and no one will defeat you."

He reached into his back pocket, and pulled out a small case. Opening it, he revealed to the boy the Boulder Badge. "Take it," he said, "you've earned it."

Donovon takes the badge from Brock slowly and looks him directly in the eyes. He says," There's no point of smiling at your opponent...the only thing that should be on your mind is an absolute victory not playing around with the enemy. The only ones that matter are my pokemon and my pokemon alone. You were tougher than I thought though....... I wouldn't mind battling you again". Donovon then walks away his pokemon surrounding happily cheering, then just then Donovon and his pokemon laugh and celebrate as they leave the Pewter City Gym and head towards the next gym in Ceruelean City.

Brock sighed. What an interesting kid. He still had much to learn, though. He watched for a moment as the trainer left, celebrating with his Pokemon. He had fought well. One could only hope he would not always think the way he did now. A laugh would do wonders to brighten his face.
